Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from June 3, 1988, features Ken Lormand and Roger Sockman reporting on the seventh week of the 1988 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Sockman first reports on the status of Governor Buddy Roemer’s education reform package, including the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) deferring action on Governor Roemer’s compromise plan for non-instructional funding and the Senate Education Committee passing a bill consolidating the state’s four higher education boards. It includes highlights of Governor Roemer speaking at the BESE Board meeting. Next, Lormand interviews State Representative Jimmy Long, the chairman of the House Education Committee, and State Senator Armand Brinkhaus, the chairman of the Senate Education Committee. They discuss Governor Roemer’s education reform plan, the bill consolidating the higher education boards, the proposed changes to the Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) for non-instructional educational items, and the proposed bridge financing for local governments. Lastly, Sockman recaps the week’s other activity at the session. These stories include:the House passing the state budget; a press conference with Governor Roemer discussing the budget passed by the House; the House Transportation Committee delaying a vote on increasing the annual fee for inspection stickers; and State Representative Bo Ackal testifying on his bill moving the regulation of bingo to the Attorney General’s Office.
