Description
This segment from the 2008 Young Heroes Award Ceremony features a profile of honoree Hope McFarland of Keithville, a senior at Caddo Magnet High School in Shreveport. McFarland was born prematurely and weighed less than two pounds. After overcoming a life and death fight in her early years, McFarland is an honors student and an energetic volunteer known as the “Keithville Cowgirl.” She has developed several community service programs, including a reading program for young students, a speaking tour on safety for seniors, and a self-esteem program for young girls. She also entertains people at libraries, children’s hospitals, and homeless shelters. McFarland has been honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award from the President’s Council on Service.
