An oral history interview conducted on September 27, 2017, with Anatole Matherne of French Settlement, Louisiana. Matherne served in the United States Navy during World War II. He discusses: being drafted; being assigned to the USS Appalachian; his participation in the occupation of Japan; seeing the damage caused by the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki; serving as a French interpreter during a visit to a French island in the Pacific; returning home; and some of his best memories of the war.
