An oral history interview conducted on November 11, 2017, with Raymond “Jim” Evans of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Evans served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He discusses: his training; his role as a tunnel rat; spending three months in the hospital after being hit with shrapnel from a hand grenade; his role in guarding the hospital in the month following an attack by the North Vietnamese Army that killed several patients; his experience of a 17-hour battle; his medals; the death of his best friend; the sacrifices made by military families; returning home; training soldiers for Vietnam at Peason Ridge at Fort Polk; his life after the war; and the discrimination faced by Vietnam veterans.
