Description
This segment from the March 10, 2023, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Kara St. Cyr’s report on a new historical marker in Carencro honoring the legacy of Catherine “TonTon” Pierre (1801-1888), a Native American healer who treated wounded soldiers during the Civil War. St. Cyr reports that the opposite side of the marker honors St. Katharine Drexel, who started a school for children of color on the same site. St. Cyr interviews Mary Flowers and Sunrae Mouton, descendants of TonTon.
