This segment from the September 14, 2018, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Kelly Spires’ report on the proposal in the United States House of Representatives to increase work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps. Spires reports that SNAP is a part of the Farm Bill that must be passed by the end of September. She interviews Danny Mintz, an anti-hunger advocate with the Louisiana Budget Project, who discusses: the misconceptions about families who receive SNAP benefits; the current work requirements; the proposed changes; the potential impact of the changes in Louisiana; and the findings from a recent study on the impact of work requirements on poverty levels.
