This segment from the July 14, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Andre Moreau’s report on the Water Institute of the Gulf’s new partnership with Deltares, a research institute in the Netherlands. This report also includes an update on the construction of the Water Campus in downtown Baton Rouge. Moreau interviews Justin Ehrenworth, the president and CEO of the Water Institute, who discusses: the importance of the partnership with Deltares; Louisiana attempting the largest coastal restoration techniques in the world; the Water Campus bringing together the Water Institute, the LSU Center for River Studies, and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) in one place; the impact of the flood of 1953 on water management in the Netherlands; and what the Water Institute can learn from Deltares. This report also includes an interview with Huib de Vriend, a former scientist at Deltares, who discusses water management in the Netherlands as a matter of survival. Lastly, Moreau interviews Denise Reed, the Vice President of Research Initiatives at the Water Institute, who discusses the Deltares partnership, the success of recent coastal restoration projects, striving for a more sustainable future on the coast, and Louisiana’s level of preparedness for the next hurricane.
