This segment from the June 30, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Kelly Spires’ report on the die off of an estimated 100,000 acres of Roseau cane in Plaquemines Parish due to an invasive Asian bug. She interviews: Dr. Andy Nyman of LSU, who discusses the importance of Roseau cane to the wetlands, the plant’s strong root system, and the bug’s weakening of the cane; Dr. Rodrigo Diaz of LSU, who discusses the life cycle of the bug, the other stressors of the Roseau cane, and the predators of the bug; and Dr. Jim Cronin of LSU, who discusses the discovery of four varieties of Roseau cane in Plaquemines Parish and his upcoming two-year research project with Dr. Diaz to learn more about those varieties.
