This segment from the June 23, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Kelly Spires’ interview via Skype with Jeremy Elam, the principal chemist on the Oleo sponge project at the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago. The Oleo sponge is the first reusable product that can absorb oil under the surface of the water. He discusses: the current technology used to fight oil spills; the lack of a method to clean the oil droplets below the surface; how the oil is extracted from the Oleo sponge; the materials used to make the sponge; the underlying technology in the sponge; and the production costs.
