This segment from the July 3, 2015, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s report on the mixed reaction in Louisiana to the United States Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same sex marriage in all 50 states. Sanford reports that Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell stated that he found nothing in the ruling that made the decision effective immediately and the Louisiana Clerks of Court Association advised its members to wait 25 days to begin issuing marriage licenses. She interviews: Michael Robinson and Earl Benjamin, the first same sex couple legally married in Louisiana; Ray Diamond, a constitutional law professor at LSU; Brandon Rob and Ryan Delaney, attorneys who represent same sex couples; Derek Penton, one of the plaintiffs in Robicheaux v. Caldwell, which challenged Louisiana’s ban on same sex marriage; Pastor Fred Luter, Sr. of the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans; and Reverend Steve Crump of the Unitarian Church in Baton Rouge.
