This segment from the February 21, 2014, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s report on the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals’ (DHH) decision to rescind their controversial revisions to the rules and regulations related to the licensing standards for abortion clinics. Sanford reports that DHH cited Acts 259 and 260 from the 2013 legislative session as the reasons for the revisions. She interviews State Representative Valarie Hodges, the author of Act 260, and State Senator Fred Mills, the author of Act 259, who discuss their view that the proposed changes to the rules and regulations had nothing to do with their bills. Sanford also interviews New Orleans attorney Ellie Schilling, as well as Bethany Van Kampen and Amy Irvin of the New Orleans Abortion Fund, who discuss their view that the revisions would act as an abortion ban. This report also includes highlights of a protest by abortion rights advocates outside of the DHH office building in Baton Rouge.
