Description
This segment from the October 4, 2013, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham and Shauna Sanford leading a panel discussion on the start of the open enrollment period for the health insurance marketplace exchanges available through the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). The panelists are: Commissioner of Insurance Jim Donelon; Beryl Mitchell, a navigator for the marketplace; Dr. Rani Whitfield, a family physician; Doug Wilkinson of the Louisiana Healthcare Education Association; Earl Williams of AARP Louisiana; and Jonathan Chapman, the executive director of the Louisiana Primary Care Association. Prior to the discussion, Sanford presents a report on four individuals who have questions about navigating the Affordable Care Act. She interviews: Elizabeth Irvine, who works with poor clients; Peter Jenkins, a recent college graduate; Roena Wilford, a retiree; and Dot Washington, the mother of two adult daughters. The panelists then discuss: the eligibility requirements for the program; the available insurance vendors in Louisiana; how to buy insurance; the enrollment period; and their unanswered questions about the program.
