Description
This segment from the August 16, 2013, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s report on Common Core, national educational standards adopted by 45 states. Sanford reports that Louisiana is implementing the math and English standards, but has not developed a uniform process for implementing the standards. Sanford also leads an in-studio panel discussion on Common Core with: Linda Johnson, the former president of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE); Holly Boffy, a current member of BESE; and Steve Monaghan, the president of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers. They discuss: their stance on Common Core; the concerns over the implementation of the standards in Louisiana; the disappointing results from other states; and the lack of available resources in poor school districts.
