This segment from the January 11, 2013, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s update on the Bayou Corne Sinkhole in Assumption Parish, six months after its discovery on August 3, 2012. Sanford reports that more than 300 residents have been evacuated from the area without knowing when they will be able to return home. She interviews Nick Romero, a Bayou Corne resident, who discusses his decision to stay home despite the evacuation order. Sanford also interviews John Boudreaux of the Assumption Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness, who discusses Texas Brine’s responsibility for mitigating the disaster, the cause of the sinkhole, the free gas leaking from the sinkhole, and the extensive environmental monitoring that will continue to take place for months and years to come.
