This segment from the October 5, 2012, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s report on forester Jim Caldwell, the public affairs officer at the Kisatchie National Forest, winning the Bronze Smokey Bear Award for Excellence in Wildfire Protection. Whinham reports that Caldwell’s wife and colleagues kept the award a secret from Caldwell for seven months. This report features Steve Weaver of the U.S. Forest Service’s Atlanta Regional Office presenting the award to Caldwell at the Louisiana Forestry Association’s Annual Conference in Marksville. Whinham also interviews: Amy Robertson of the Kisatchie National Forest; Jim Caldwell; Mike Balboni, a Kisatchie National Forest Supervisor; and Buck Vandersteen, the executive director of the Louisiana Forestry Association.
