This segment from the June 22, 2012, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Donna LaFleur’s visit to the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo in Monroe. She talks to zoo director Joseph Clawson about the zoo’s goal of receiving accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the zoo’s role in housing animals from other zoos and rehabilitated birds, including brown pelicans affected by the 2010 BP Oil Spill. She also speaks to Melissa Davison, a bird and reptile keeper, about the zoo’s six rehabilitated bald eagles and its collection of parrots. LaFleur also talks to Jessica Boniol, a bird and reptile keeper, about the zoo’s rehabilitation of diamondback terrapins affected by the BP Oil Spill. Lastly, LaFleur interviews Lisa Taylor, a general curator, about the zoo’s collection of snakes donated by their former owners. LaFleur’s tour of the zoo also includes footage of an albino alligator, lemurs, gibbons, owls, a hippopotamus, and a peacock. This story is a part of the “Zooisiana” series.
