This segment from the April 16, 2010, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Donna LaFleur’s report on birds in Louisiana. She interviews Paul Kemp of the National Audubon Society, who discusses the findings of a recent report on the state of birds in Louisiana, including the bird habitats that are threatened. LaFleur also talks to Melanie Driscoll of the National Audubon Society, who discusses the high number of important bird areas in the state and how birds serve as an indicator of a healthy environment. LaFleur next speaks to Jean Landry of the Nature Conservancy, who discusses the 100 acres of land owned and preserved by the Nature Conservancy in Grand Isle, their work in maintaining trees with the help of the local community, and their annual Grand Isle Migratory Bird Festival.
