This segment from the December 18, 2009, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Donna LaFleur’s report on Jazzmen Rice, a new variety of premium long grain aromatic rice developed by the LSU AgCenter. She talks to Dr. Steve Linscombe, the Southwest Regional Director of the LSU AgCenter, about the twelve-year development of the new rice variety. She also interviews Egbert Ming, George Chin, and Andrew Wong, three childhood friends and business partners from New Orleans, about their work in bringing this new rice variety to market under the name Jazzmen Rice. LaFleur also speaks to Lamar Berry of International Marketing Systems about the brand’s use of the image of Louis Armstrong on the logo and Jose Batres, the director of exports for Jazzmen Rice, about where the company plans to export the rice from this first harvest.
