This segment from the November 20, 2009, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s visit to the Southern Pacific 745, the last surviving steam engine made in Louisiana, at the Louisiana Steam Train Association (LASTA) rail yard in Jefferson, Louisiana. Whinham talks to LASTA members Bill Morris, Richard Jacobs, Barry Keegan, and Roger Brown about the history of the SP 745, their restoration efforts, the plans for the train’s 5-year maintenance repairs, and their hopes for the future of the train.
