This segment from the June 12, 2009, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s recap of the events at the seventh week of the 2009 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature, including: State Representative Karen Carter Peterson, State Representative Walt Leger, III and Jeb Bruneau of the Pelican Institute testifying on Peterson’s bill increasing the tax on cigarettes by 50 cents; State Representative Hollis Downs discussing his support of delaying personal income itemized tax deductions in order to use the money for higher education; State Senator Bob Kostelka, Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek, and State Representative Herbert Dixon testifying on and debating a bill creating an alternative curriculum and diploma program for high school students; State Senator Rob Marionneaux and Chris Young of the Beer Industry League of Louisiana testifying on a bill banning smoking in bars that sell food; Jimmie Faircloth, the Governor’s Executive Counsel, and State Senator Rob Marionneaux testifying on a bill repealing the state’s motorcycle helmet law; State Representative Juan LaFonta discussing his view that there is a lack of proper debate on the state budget; and State Senator Danny Martiny discussing the amendments that have decreased the proposed penalties for suspected drunk drivers who refuse to take a Breathalyzer test.
