Description
This segment from the May 15, 2009, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s report on the potential impact of a 30% budget cut to the Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism on the sixteen historic sites operated by the Office of State Parks, including closures during the week and staff reductions. Whinham talks to Carrie Miller and John House, two workers at the Audubon State Historic Site in St. Francisville, about their work, the importance of the educational programs at the site, and how they plan to face the potential cuts. Whinham also interviews Dr. Stuart Johnson of the Office of State Parks about the budget cuts having the potential to cut attendance at historic sites in half, the negative economic impact of the closures to the surrounding communities, and the three new state parks that will be unable to open because of a lack of funding.
