This segment from the December 2, 2005, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Donna LaFleur’s interview with Donna Powell at her Baton Rouge home, which is serving as a shelter for birds evacuated from Hurricane Katrina. Powell discusses: running 911 Parrot Alert, a lost and found website for parrots; Hurricane Katrina evacuees contacting her to help find their lost birds; her home serving as a staging area for avian rescues in the weeks following Hurricane Katrina; housing a total of 300 birds; her efforts to return the birds to their owners; a typical day of taking care of the 200 remaining birds; and her joy in seeing the birds reunited with their owners.
