Description
This segment from the September 16, 2005, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Donna LaFleur’s report on the animal rescue operations in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. This report includes footage of a rescue team from the International Fund for Animal Welfare traveling by boat to rescue animals from the floodwaters of New Orleans, including the pig owned by New Orleans resident James Parsons. LaFleur talks to Dr. Maxwell Lea, the Louisiana State Veterinarian, and Sandra Montrose of the ASPCA about the scope of the animal rescue operation, the largest in the history of the United States. She also visits the emergency animal shelter at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, where she talks to Dr. Joe Goldman, the USDA Veterinarian-In-Charge, about the treatment received by the rescued animals, including dogs, cats, and horses. LaFleur also speaks to two of the volunteers working at the shelter, Alexis Boyle of the Arizona Humane Society and Chris Dunn of Keystone Heights, Florida. Lastly, LaFleur visits the emergency shelter at Parker Coliseum on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, where she talks to Dr. Susan Eddlestone of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine about LSU students playing a critical role in caring for the animals at the shelter.
