Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from July 26, 1991, features Robert Collins, Karen Nachman, and Jeff Duhe previewing the 1991 gubernatorial election. Nachman first reports on the economy as a traditional campaign issue, including the economic recovery, the state’s $1 billion state budget deficit for the next fiscal year, and the possibility of tax reform. She interviews: Mark Drennen, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR); Dr. Loren Scott, LSU economist; Steve Winham, Legislative Fiscal Officer; and Dr. Jim Richardson, an economist with the Louisiana Revenue Estimating Conference. Next, Duhe reports on the eight candidates in the race, Governor Buddy Roemer, Congressman Clyde Holloway, State Representative David Duke, Public Service Commissioner Kathleen Blanco, former Banking Commissioner Fred Dent, Franklin Mayor Sam Jones, Spanish teacher Ann Thompson, and former Governor Edwin Edwards. He interviews Bob Madison of the Holloway campaign, David Duke, Kathleen Blanco, Fred Dent, Sam Jones, Ann Thompson, and Edwin Edwards. Lastly, Collins leads a panel discussion with: Jerry Doty, a political consultant with Louisiana Poll; Dr. Wayne Parent, a political science professor at LSU; and David Roach, a political consultant with Political Action Co. They discuss: Kenner Mayor Aaron Broussard dropping out the race; fundraising; the three main candidates, Edwards, Roemer, and Duke; the low polling numbers for Holloway; and Roemer’s campaign strategy.
