This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from July 15, 1988, features Ken Lormand and Roger Sockman reporting on the conclusion of the 1988 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Sockman first reports on the final days of the session, including the passage of the state budget and a campaign finance reform bill. His report includes: State Representative Robert Adley presenting an amendment to the state budget on the House floor; interviews with State Senator Randy Ewing, State Senator B.B. “Sixty” Rayburn, and State Representative John Travis on the budget; and State Representative Joe Accardo presenting his campaign finance bill. Sockman also looks back at Governor Buddy Roemer’s opening address and interviews state legislators about the work done in those areas during the session. He interviews: State Senator Cecil Picard; State Representative Raymond Laborde; State Representative John Alario; State Senator Cleo Fields; State Representative Quentin Dastugue; State Representative Kip Holden; and State Representative Hunt Downer. Lastly, Lormand interviews three capitol reporters: Bob Courtney, the political director for WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge; John Maginnis, publisher of Gris Gris Magazine; and John Hill, bureau chief for the Gannett News Service. They discuss: their views of the session; the lessons learned by the Roemer Administration; Roemer’s governing style; and the results of a recent poll on Roemer’s job performance.
