This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from May 26, 1986, features Ken Johnson’s report on coastal erosion in Louisiana. His report touches on the state’s ongoing coastal protection projects, including Fourchon Island. He interviews: Dr. Chip Groat, director of the Louisiana Geological Survey; Shea Penland, state geologist; John Sutter, state geologist; John Tarver of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries; and David Chambers, USGS coastal protection chief. Johnson also conducts an in-studio interview with Dr. Chip Groat and David Chambers. They discuss: convincing state legislators that protecting the coastline is a priority; the dangers posed by coastal erosion; the potential economic impact of coastal land loss; the state’s 10-year coastal protection plan, including the restoration of the state’s barrier islands; and their work in securing federal funding to help fund the protection plan.
