Description
This segment from the January 11, 1985, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Robyn Ekings’ report on state employees from around the state holding a rally in Baton Rouge for 7% pay raises. Ekings reports that state employees have not received a raise since 1981 and that Governor Edwin Edwards promised them a 10% pay raise during his 1983 gubernatorial campaign. She also reports that the Louisiana Civil Service Commission unanimously approved a 7% pay raise for state employees. Her report includes highlights of speeches by state employees Billy Nichols and James Hemphill at the rally. She also interviews: Edward Hart, state employee; Herb Sumrall, the director of state civil service; Louie Lane, state employee; Lucille Brashier, state employee; and Garland Webb, the director of the Louisiana chapter of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
