This segment from the October 12, 1984, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Robyn Ekings’ visit to Jefferson Island in Iberia Parish, four years after an oil drilling rig punched a hole in a salt dome beneath Lake Peigneur and nearly destroyed the island. Ekings interviews J. Lyles Bayless, Jr., a Jefferson Island resident who lost his home and an imported conservatory of exotic plants and flowers to the disaster.
