Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from May 9, 1984, features Ken Johnson and Robyn Ekings hosting a daily legislative report on the 1984 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Johnson first reports on the day’s headlines. These stories include: Governor Edwin Edwards discussing the status of his proposed 10% pay raise for state employees and teachers; State Representative Kevin Reilly’s tax trade-off plan, which repeals two recent tax increases and removes all exemptions on the sales tax; and State Representative Charles R. Jones testifying in favor of a bill requiring insurance companies to provide an affirmative action plan for hiring employees. Next, Ekings reports on labor’s support of the “Big Four” labor-management proposals under consideration at the session: the repeal of right to work; the reinstitution of third party tort suits; the repeal of recent changes to workers’ compensation; and the repeal of recent changes to unemployment compensation. Her report includes interviews with State Senator Joe Sevario, the chairman of the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee, and State Senator Richard Turnley. Lastly, Johnson and Ekings conduct an in-studio interview with Victor Bussie, the president of the Louisiana AFL-CIO, and Gordon Flory, the secretary and treasurer of the Louisiana AFL-CIO. They discuss: their support of repealing right to work; the value of labor unions; the agency shop bill; and their support of repealing the recent changes to workers’ compensation.
