This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from September 19, 1980, features Beth George leading a panel discussion with three capitol reporters: Jack Wardlaw of the New Orleans Times-Picayune/States-Item; Brenda Hodge of KTBS-TV in Shreveport; and Bob Courtney of WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge.  They discuss: Governor Dave Treen’s veto of 179 local construction projects from the capital outlay bill passed during the recent special session of the Louisiana Legislature; the reaction of local officials and state legislators to the veto of projects in their area; the growing conflict between the Senate and the Treen administration as a result of the special session; Senate President Michael O’Keefe solidifying his position in the Senate; the re-election of United States Senator Russell Long over State Representative Woody Jenkins; the upcoming run-off election in the 4th Congressional District between incumbent Buddy Leach and Buddy Roemer and the effect of the indictment of Roemer’s father, former Commissioner of Administration Charles Roemer, on the campaign; former Governor Edwin Edwards’ announcement that he is running President Jimmy Carter’s re-election campaign in Louisiana; and Governor Treen’s announcement of Ronald Reagan’s promise that, if elected, the federal government will not store nuclear waste in Louisiana salt domes without the state’s permission.
