This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from November 27, 2019, features Natasha Williams leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on food insecurity in Louisiana. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Peggy Perkins, a Top Box customer; Alphonse Lathan, a Top Box customer; Connor Deloach of Top Box; Theo Richards of the Capital Area Transit System in Baton Rouge; Korey Patty, the executive director of Feeding Louisiana; Kathy Saloy of HOPE Enterprise Corporation; East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome; and Dr. Catherine Champagne of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. The audience members then discuss how their organizations are working to combat food insecurity. A panel of experts then joins the audience members to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Kathryn Parker, the executive director of Market Umbrella; Edgar Cage of Together Louisiana; Stephanie Elwood of the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center; and Clint Caldwell, the general manager for Shoppers Value Foods. They discuss: the biggest challenge to food security in Louisiana; encouraging healthy diets; incentivizing retailers in food deserts to carry fresh foods in their stores; mobile farmers markets; the importance of teaching people how to grow their own food; the reasons why grocery stores do not open in food deserts; combating food insecurity on college campuses; encouraging farmers to grow more fruits and vegetables; and the Baton Rouge Healthy Food Retail Initiative.
