Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from September 26, 2019, features Robert Travis Scott leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on RESET Louisiana, a nonpartisan agenda for the 2019 statewide elections put together by the Committee of 100, the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL), and the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR). A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes an interview with Barry Erwin of CABL, who discusses the four issues covered in the agenda, education, state finances, infrastructure, and criminal justice. The audience members then discuss their thoughts on the recommendations. A panel of experts then joins the audience members to answer their questions. The panelists are: Michael Olivier, the CEO of the Louisiana Committee of 100 for Economic Development; Camille Conaway, the senior vice president for the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI); Dr. Jim Richardson, LSU economist and former member of the Louisiana Revenue Estimating Conference; and Erich Ponti, the executive director of the Louisiana Asphalt Pavement Association and the Louisiana Coalition to Fix our Roads. They discuss: their views on resetting Louisiana; early childhood education; examining tax exemptions on a regular basis; higher education funding; alternative methods for funding infrastructure improvements; rolling back occupational licensing requirements; improving economic opportunities for people of color; and economic development for small towns. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Robert Travis Scott
