This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from January 23, 2019, features Barry Erwin leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on Governor John Bel Edwards’ $1,000 teacher pay raise proposal. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Amelia Gilmore, an elementary school teacher; Dr. Keith Courville, the executive director of Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana; Stephen Waguespack, the president and CEO of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) and a member of the MFP Task Force; and State Representative Nancy Landry, the chairwoman of the House Education Committee. The audience members then discuss the impact of the lack of salary increases on teacher morale and whether $1,000 is an adequate pay raise. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions.
