Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from October 24, 2012, features Craig Freeman leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on Louisiana youth participation in the 2012 presidential election. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler; Michael Climek of the LSU Public Policy Research Lab; Charlie Cook, political analyst from “The Cook Political Report”; Dr. Rosanne Scholl, a professor with the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication; and Christopher Ambrogio, Alexander Duchene, Adria Porch, Garrett Clawson, Matt Novak, and Colton Rachal, college students. The audience members then discuss the issues that matter most to them in the election, their sources of information, and how they plan to get involved in the election. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Jas Sullivan, a political science professor at LSU; former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer, a 2012 presidential candidate; Willie McCorkle, the Student Government Association president at Southern University; and Matt Dardenne of Red Six Media. They discuss: the importance of the youth vote in the presidential election; the Electoral College versus the popular vote; combating youth apathy; third party candidates; the impact of technology and social media on elections; the voter’s responsibility to educate themselves on the candidates and issues on the ballot; the issues not being discussed in the campaign; and the connection between money and politics. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Craig Freeman
