Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from January 27, 2010, features a discussion between the panelists and audience members on the 238 recommendations made by the Louisiana Commission on Streamlining Government to help cut $802 million from the state budget. The panelists include three members of the Commission and a journalist: State Senator Mike Michot, the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee; John Neely Kennedy, Louisiana State Treasurer; Barry Erwin, the President of the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL); and Mark Ballard of the Baton Rouge Advocate. They discussed: whether the state should rely solely on budget cuts; reducing the number of state employees; privatization; reallocating the existing budget; the rising cost of Medicaid; the future of the Charity Hospital system; the profitable areas of government; the potential impact of cuts to higher education; the possibility of consolidating the state’s retirement systems; and the dedicated funds within the budget.Host: Beth CourtneyHost: Craig Freeman
