Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from May 23, 2007, features Craig Freeman leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on Louisiana’s image from both the perspective of its citizens and the rest of the United States. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne; Michael Olivier of the Louisiana Department of Economic Development (LED); Steven Procopio of the LSU Public Policy Research Lab; John Goodman, actor; Stacey Simmons, director of the Red Stick International Animation Festival; and Anne Chynoweth of the Humane Society of the United States. The audience members then discuss their views on how education levels in the state have affected economic development and promoting Louisiana’s image through tourism. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Sherri McConnell of the entertainment section of LED; Stephen Moret of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber; and Dr. Randle Raggio, a professor of marketing at LSU. They discuss how to utilize Louisiana's natural beauty to promote tourism and industry, the effects of poverty on outsider perceptions of Louisiana, and the growing entertainment industry in Louisiana. This program was preserved through a 2022-2023 Public Broadcasting Preservation Fellowship. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Craig Freeman
