Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from August 23, 2006, features Craig Freeman leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on the balance of academics and athletics for Louisiana’s college and university system. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Dr. Leonard Moore, Professor of History at Louisiana State University (LSU); D-D Breaux, LSU Gymnastics coach; Carlos Costa, an LSU graduate student; Dr. Jerry Baudin, Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration at LSU; Dr. Randy Moffett, President of Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU); Dennis Roland, SLU football coach; and Kelly Rodrigue, the registrar at Nicholls State University. The audience members then discuss their views on how universities and colleges allocate their budget between academics and athletics, if athletic programs support or detract from the academics in colleges and universities, and whether student athletes should be paid. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Sally Clausen, President of the University of Louisiana System; Skip Bertman, LSU’s Athletic Director; and Pokey Chatman, head coach of LSU Lady Tiger Basketball team. They discuss: the economic impact of collegiate sports and whether college athletic programs have become too commercialized, ways to better balance academics and sports, and finally, how universities and colleges financially afford their athletic programs. This program was preserved through a 2022-2023 Public Broadcasting Preservation Fellowship. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Craig Freeman
