Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from March 23, 2005, features Charles Zewe leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on whether the state of Louisiana should subsidize professional sports teams. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Dr. Tim Ryan, an economist and the chancellor of the University of New Orleans; State Senator James David Cain; State Senator Jay Dardenne; and Paul Arrigo of the Baton Rouge Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The audience members then discuss how far the state should go in keeping the New Orleans Saints in Louisiana. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Janet Howard, the president of the Bureau of Governmental Research in New Orleans; State Senator Ken Hollis; State Representative Taylor Townsend; and Dave Dixon, a New Orleans businessman who helped bring the Saints and the Superdome to New Orleans. They discuss: the economic impact of the Saints; the ongoing negotiations between the state and the Saints; who should pay for Superdome renovations; and whether the Saints should be required to open their books if they accept state subsidies. Hosts: Charles Zewe and Beth Courtney
