Description
Speeches by Rev. Raymond Jetson and Alex Velasquez before the Baton Rouge Press Club on April 2, 2012. Jetson is the chairman of the Baton Rouge Transit Coalition and Velasquez is a representative of Tax Busters. They both discuss the upcoming April 21st election on a proposed tax to support the Capital Area Transit System (CATS). Jetson, a supporter of the tax, discusses: the reasons this tax is needed; a comparison of CATS to the transit systems in other Southern cities; and how the tax revenue would be used, including increases in transfer centers and the number of routes, access to more geographic areas, GPS tracking, and a new board system. Velasquez, an opponent of the tax, then discusses how the proposed tax increase would affect the homestead exemption, property taxes, and the age 65 tax freeze. Following the speeches, both Jetson and Velasquez answer questions from the press.
