Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Legends” from June 16, 1994, features an interview with Wynton Marsalis conducted by Gus Weill. Marsalis, a native of Kenner, is a Grammy Award-winning trumpeter, composer, educator, and the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. He is the son of jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis and the brother of jazz musicians Branford, Delfeayo, and Jason Marsalis. He discusses: how his family’s move to New Orleans at age twelve impacted his interest in music; the network of older musicians who helped him to understand the importance of practice; studying at the Julliard School; the effect of rock and roll on music; his work with children; the Grammy Awards; publicity and music critics; his work habits; the future of jazz music; and the importance of education.
