Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana’s Workforce in Crisis” from May 28, 1987, features Warren Bell leading a discussion between the panelists and audience members on the education and retraining of the state’s workforce. The panelists are: Dr. Loren Scott, chairman of the economics department at LSU; Secretary Gayle Truly of the Louisiana Department of Labor; Mr. Ray, co-founder of the Job Opportunity Bridge; and Judy Corkern of the Louisiana Workers Assistance Program. Prior to the discussion, Robin Hinton profiles three unemployed Louisiana workers who are participating in job training programs at the Women’s Training Center and The Learning Center, Marion Wallace, Helen Isaac, and Ned Bourg. The panelists and audience members then discuss: the need to diversify Louisiana’s economy; the current unemployment statistics; programs for retraining workers; their advice for recent college graduates; the outlook for the oil industry; the need for more career education; temporary employment opportunities; a senior employment program; the competition between recent college graduates and unemployed workers; and how Louisiana is preparing for the future job market.
