This episode of the series “Folks” from February 25, 1990, features Sonya Masingale moderating a discussion between the panelists and audience members on black political participation in Louisiana and the nation. The panelists are Dr. Huey Perry, a political science professor at Southern University in Baton Rouge, and Bethel Nathan, a political consultant with the Nathan Group in Baton Rouge. They discuss: the state of black politics in Louisiana; the recent public disagreement between black legislators; the findings from the Nathan Group’s recent nationwide poll of black voters; the increase in voter registration for African American women; and the importance of the 1989 election of African Americans in two major political offices – Doug Wilder as the Governor of Virginia and David Dinkins as the Mayor of New York City.
