Description
This segment from the October 29, 1989, episode of the series “Folks” features Sonya Masingale’s report on Project Delta, a program sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority that provides in-classroom support services and after-school tutoring services to students at Park Elementary School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She interviews: Lora Patureau, principal; Vernadine Lockett, director of Project Delta; and Sheryl Smith, counselor for Project Delta. Masingale also conducts an in-studio interview with Dr. Donald Hoover of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board and Geraldine Brown, a co-founder of Project Delta. They discuss: how the students in East Baton Rouge Parish are performing on the state’s mandatory standardized tests; the origins of Project Delta; the differences they see in the students that have participated in the program; and the possibility of other volunteer groups starting similar programs at schools around the state.
