Description
This segment from the April 9, 1989, episode of the series “Folks” features Sonya Masingale’s profile of Christian Services, a nonprofit organization that helps people living in poverty in Shreveport, Louisiana. She interviews Sister Margaret Caffery, the founder and director, who discusses: the start of Christian Services in 1970; their first project, a school breakfast program; their collaboration with other churches; their support they receive from the community through donations; her home visits to learn the needs of the people they serve; and their mission of helping people living in poverty to learn their value as humans. Masingale also interviews the directors of three other Christian Services projects: Alice Robertson, the manager of the Hospitality House, which serves hot meals; Sister Laverne Dolphin, the director of Mother Stewart House, a shelter for homeless women; and Dr. Robert Jackson, the director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Health Center.
