This segment from the November 27, 1988, episode of the series “Folks” features Sonya Masingale’s report on the first black alumni reunion at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge. Her report includes highlights of a speech given by A.P. Tureaud, Jr., the first African American to enroll as an undergraduate at LSU in 1953. She also interviews: A.P. Tureaud, Jr.; Mamie Lyn Hall, the reunion coordinator; Greg Hamilton, Class of 1974; Felicia Burchell, Class of 1975 and 1978; and Jacquee Minor, Class of 1980. Masingale also conducts an in-studio interview with Kerry Pourciau of the Class of 1973, the only African American to serve as the president of the Student Government Association at LSU. He discusses: the subtle racism experienced by black students during his time at LSU; the importance of encouraging student involvement on campus; his involvement with the alumni association; and the establishment of the A.P. Tureaud Sr. Alumni Association for black alumni.
