This episode of the series “Folks” from April 26, 1987, focuses on issues related to the growing Hispanic population in Louisiana. Sonya Masingale first presents highlights from Rob Hinton’s April 1985 interview with Esperanza Sciortino, the first person to serve as the Assistant to the Governor on Hispanic American Affairs. Next, Lynda Roedts reports on the unique immigration status of the 600 Cubans detained at the Oakdale Federal Detention Center who entered the country illegally and committed crimes. She interviews J.R. Johnson, warden, and David Johnston of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Lastly, Masingale conducts an in-studio interview with David Kattan, an attorney from New Orleans who specializes in immigration law. He discusses the new federal immigration law aimed at stopping illegal immigration and its impact on the Hispanic population in Louisiana.
