This episode of the series “Folks” from April 20, 1986, features a visit to Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, the only historically black Catholic university in the United States. Rob Hinton first interviews Dr. Norman Francis, the university president, who discusses: the high quality education available at Xavier; the students they look for; surviving the competition with larger universities around the state; their financial issues; the importance of investing in education; and the impact of the cutbacks to financial aid on enrollment. Next, Sonya Masingale interviews Sister Rosemarie Kleinhaus, the university dean, who discusses the history of the university, including founder Mother Katharine Drexel. Masingale then interviews four Xavier seniors about their experiences at the university: Rachel Barranco, Karl McDonald, Karen Crawford, and Kenny Lloyd. Next, Masingale interviews Dr. Alfred Guillaume, Jr., the dean of arts and sciences, who discusses Xavier’s academic programs and faculty. Lastly, Hinton interviews Dr. John Scott, the chairman of the art department, who discusses: the art program; his career as an artist; teaching his students by example; and his current projects.
