Description
This segment from the February 3, 1985, episode of the series “Folks” feature Rob Hinton’s report on the connection between Senegal and Louisiana. He first interviews Maurice Dedieu, a linguistic attaché with the French embassy, who discusses his time living in Senegal and his collection of Senegalese glass paintings. Hinton next interviews Dr. Carl Brasseaux, the assistant director of the Center for Louisiana Studies at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) in Lafayette, who discusses his research into the Senegalese roots of the majority of the slaves in south Louisiana. Lastly, Herman Mhire, the director of the University Art Museum at USL, gives Hinton a tour of their exhibit of Dedieu’s collection of glass paintings, including scenes depicting stories from the Islamic tradition and everyday life in Senegal.
