Rob Hinton first reports on the increasing prominence of vocational-technical education in Louisiana. He visits T.H. Harris Vocational-Technical School in Opelousas and interviews: Caesar Veazie, school director; Ronnie Deshotel, non-destructive testing instructor; Ernest McKinney, drafting instructor; Michael McKinney, student; Sandra Farrar, office occupations instructor; Una Allen, former student; and Margaret Aucoin of the Trade and Industry Council. Genevieve Stewart then reports on the reasons why children in the public school system are struggling to read and testing poorly on standardized tests. She interviews Marilyn Hamilton, an associate professor of speech at LSU, and Dr. Willene Taylor, an English professor at Southern University in New Orleans.
