Description
This episode of the series “Folks” from September 25, 1983, focuses on senior citizens in Louisiana. Rob Hinton first reports on nursing homes. He interviews: Ruth Pritzen, Thomas O’Neil, Eva Denham, and Olga Gonsoulin, nursing home residents; William Kimbro of the Louisiana Nursing Home Association; and Danny Brown, Mary Powell, and Jim Powell, nursing home administrators. Genevieve Stewart then visits St. James Place and Wesley Plaza, two continuing care retirement communities in Baton Rouge. She interviews: Bill Bevins, the director of St. James Place; Mildred Payne and Ruby Hilsmeyer, St. James Place residents; Michael Cox, the manager of Wesley Plaza; and Ora Lee Gant, Edward Robinson, and Octavia Career, Wesley Plaza residents. Next, Stewart interviews Bill Benedetto of Gulf States Utilities, who discusses Project Care, a program to help the elderly on fixed incomes to pay their utility bills. Lastly, Stewart reports on the recreational activities available to senior citizens at the senior centers operated by the Council on Aging in each parish of the state. She interviews Anna Marie Mancusi, a body recall instructor, and Sharon LaFleur of the Council on Aging in East Baton Rouge Parish.
